Finneas is often most recognized for his work as a producer and collaborator of his world-conquering sister, Billie Eilish. Late this summer he announced his debut EP Blood Harmony and revealed a short run of dates in support of its release.
The October tour turned out to be nothing short of a treat for fans of his solo work.
As I went up the stairs of historic Thalia Hall I could already hear the loud chatter from the crowd waiting anxiously for their main attraction, and I was surprised that this wasn’t a packed house. However, from the moment Finneas hit the stage to open his set playing “I Lost A Friend” I legit had to thank God that there weren’t more people because their collective jumping was making the floor shake! The place looked about 75% full but it bounced like it was in violation of the total capacity code by a couple hundred.
The music itself was great to see in this kind of setting. Some of the performances that stood out the most after that opening number included “Angel” which marked the second time fans went bonkers as they sang along, and set-closer “Let’s Fall In Love For The Night” provided the climax for the night especially when hits the final “Don’t waste your eyes on jealous guys, fuck that noise.” The best story-time moment award goes to his prelude to “Die Alone,” which he said was a song he wrote in Dallas about a girl from Chicago that made him think “oh I’m fucked” the second he dropped her off after their first date. He added: “when you fall in love with someone you realize that none of the memories you made without that person matter that much.” You could feel how this made his die-hards absolutely melt and it gave off this unexplainable energy that filled the room.
Well aware of the diversity of the crowd, he thanked those who came out on a Sunday night, those who convinced their parents to bring them, and those parents who agreed to take their kids out. “To me the moment that I’m in right now is my favorite so thank you for being here.”
From the floor to the balcony, anywhere you looked you’d find teens & tweens (plus the rest of us) with their hands in the air grasping either their phones or cardboard signs, and others would extend out towards the stage as if they were attempting to physically catch the notes Finneas sang into the mic. If you’re into live experiences, you would wish to feel half as elated as these fans were and that’d be more than enough to make you happy at your next event.
