On August 30th, Chicago’s Subterranean transformed into a sonic sanctuary for post-punk devotees as Fantasma Negra headlined Unsummer Fest, debuting their latest EP Lust. The one-night-only fest felt like a love letter to the DIY post-punk scene, a gritty, unfiltered, and absolutely epic sensation.
Inside the packed venue, seven bands performed through energetic sets, but it was Fantasma Negra that stole the night. Opening with “Nameless Hopeless,” the band wasted no time immersing the crowd in the excitement. Frontwoman Alica Gonzalez commanded the stage with a voice that cut through with a dark, soulful, and relentless intensity.
The upstairs floor of Subterranean was pure chaos in the best way possible— imagine beach balls in the air, guitars wailing, and mosh pits. By the time the band launched into “Feathers,” a standout track layered with swirling riffs and searing guitar solos, the crowd was fully under their spell. Fans were dancing to every note, chanting after each song, pleading for more, which left the band in shock to see how much fans yearned for more.
Throughout their performance, tracks like “Bliss” showcased Fantasma Negra’s ability to firmly root their sound in post-punk traditions, with emotionally charged lyrics and atmospheric riffs that reflect personal depth. It’s clear the band draws from raw, internal experiences to craft songs that resonate widely, capturing that universal feeling of wanting to escape into another world.
Fantasma Negra’s set felt like a rallying cry in support of Chicago’s local music scene, inviting both local and out-of-town bands to join in the celebration. This performance proved that their latest EP, Lust is packed with songs that can bring a room full of strangers together through rhythm, energy, and an undeniable sense of joy.
