POD Premiere: Effie – “Spiteful”

We know times are strange but here’s a little something to help you escape for a few minutes. Today, we’re pleased to be able to bring to you “Spiteful,” the latest song from London-based R&B singer-songwriter Effie as a Pursuit Of Dopeness Premiere

“Spiteful” starts off with a slinky guitar lick before Effie’s vocals coming into frame soon after. Her words are accented by a deep bass beat that gives them the effect of punching you in the throat as she sings about being pushed to make mistake after mistake that it now turns into your norm. She ends the track by fittingly interpolating Kendrick Lamar’s classic lyrics “I am a sinner / Who’s probably gonna sin again / (Lord) forgive me / Things I don’t understand / (Sometimes) I need to be alone” to further drive home the theme of how spite is cyclical and is bound to continue affecting you.

Effie told us about the track:

Inspired by events around me and the turn of relationships I’ve seen, Spiteful was born out of observation. Spite is something we have all given out or been on the receiving end of in different situations. People get caught in the cycle, trying to one up the other with the desire to hurt each other.

I’ve been a witness to something so sweet turning in to something sour and I wanted to really get that across in a record I know a lot of people will relate to.
