It still hurts to reckon with the news that Kobe Bryant lost his life over the weekend, along with his daughter Gigi and 7 others. While the sports world is in mourning and the tributes and personal anecdotes continue to come in, a notable addition to that pile comes by way of Bad Bunny and his new song “6 Rings.”
The track samples commentary from Kobe’s iconic 81-point game against Toronto Raptors back in 2006 plus his final speech as a player, and it features the Puerto Rican recounting the influence the NBA & Lakers legend has had on his life. The most touching part was when San Benito says Kobe won a 6th ring through his marriage, and he notes the tragic loss of Gianna. Ending the verse with Gigi and Kobe leaving this world together so that they have someone to ball with is what really made my heart break.
