The Replacements - Poke Me In My Cage

The Replacements burst back in the scene last year with a reunion on the stages of Riot Fest, but it appears as if a full-on return with new material is “likely.” The first indication of that return came earlier today via “Poke Me In My Cage,” a 24-minute Jazz improvisation.

The band took to SoundCloud to release the new tune, which was recorded at Woolly Mammoth Sound in Waltham, MA. Listen to it below. Continue Reading

Video: The Replacements – “Alex Chilton” (Live on ‘Tonight Show’)

posted by Oscar September 10, 2014

For the first time in 25 years, The Replacements graced the stage for a “small screen” performance. The track played by the Minneapolis, MN band was “Alex Chilton” for The Tonight Show.

It was a great performance and it definitely didn’t include any of the sort of debauchery that got them banned from 30 Rock the last time they were on TV.

See that 1986 performance below. Continue Reading

Nirvana, KISS, NWA Nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2014

posted by Oscar October 15, 2013

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame

Rolling Stone has announced the nominees for the 2014 class of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Nirvana, KISS (finally!), The Replacements, Hall and Oates, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Chic, Deep Purple, Peter Gabriel, LL Cool J, N.W.A., Link Wray, the Meters, Linda Ronstadt, Cat Stevens, Yes and the Zombies.

For the second consecutive year, the public gets to vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 10th, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they’d like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a “fan’s ballot” that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class of 2014.

The top vote-getters will be inducted in April at a ceremony in New York City so make sure you vote for your favorites from this list.

Nirvana has made the list on its first year of eligibility, making them the only act on this list with that highlight. KISS on the other hand had been omitted from the list of nominees every year since they were first eligible back in ’99. Two of my oldest T-shirts (which I still own and regularly wear) have these two bands’ respective logos emblazoned on them and I couldn’t be more glad about this news. Now, to see who gets in.

If you ever paid attention to the name of the authors on P.O.D. you may have noticed by now that I’m “the Rock guy” around here and that should have made you expect me to write up a list of the top 10 acts you just can’t miss at Riot Fest (Chicago) ’13.  This is my third Riot Fest in a row, my first covered on this site (in our traditional fan-view way, of course), and I’m already planning for this to be another tradition of mine. We’re just days away from rocking Humboldt Park and without a single note yet to be played, the music festival and carnival is already looking like it may be one of the best they’ve ever organized.
