Video: The Orwells – “Black Francis”

posted by Oscar January 12, 2017

Our boys The Orwells have shared their new visuals for a newly unveiled track, “Black Francis.” The song will appear Terrible Human Beings, out February 17th on Canvasback Music.

Speaking about its conception, Guitarist Matt O’Keefe calls the song “an ode to one of our main men,” referring to The Pixies Frank Black, aka Black Francis.  “Felt long overdue that we paid him some direct respect. We’ve been ripping him off for years, hopefully this chips away at the massive debt we’ve got to him.”

The music video was directed by Matt’s brother, Eddie O’Keefe. In a press release, Eddie says the goal was to”channel a sort of nineties hip-hop energy; something that could compliment the track’s Beastie Boys-like cadence. In an effort to achieve that feeling, we drew inspiration from Spike Lee, using the opening-title dance sequence from Do The Right Thing and his infamous floating subject shots as the foundation of our shoot.” See it above. The Orwells Release 7-Minute Epic “Double Feature”

posted by Oscar December 5, 2016

The Orwells have released a new track off their forthcoming album Terrible Human Beings. The album closer is a 7 minute-plus epic titled “Double Feature.” Halfway through the track it goes into a dizzyingly alluring instrumental, packed with an experimental groove.

I’ve listened to this song 5 times in a row and I just can’t get enough of the instrumental. The bass line just wraps itself around you and sucks you in for the guitars’ sweet-then-dirty assault. Throw in some howling vocals from Mario Cuomo and you got yourself some real Rock & Roll magic. Hear it below. Continue Reading

Recap: The Orwells and Their Midwest Shitfest

posted by Oscar August 15, 2016

Over the weekend The Orwells played two shows at Chop Shop as part of their Midwest Shitfest event. The band was supported that night by the bands The Symposium, Post Animal, and Joe Bordenaro & The Late Bloomers.

We were present on night 2 of the Shitfest, and it felt like it didn’t matter that this was a 21+ event because that crowd acted just as rowdy for the headlining act as I would imagine the all-ages show must’ve been like. All in all, this was a can’t-miss performance not only because The Orwells are legit one of my favorites bands and I know from experience over the years that they’re killer playing live, but also because this event was put on for the band to play new tunes and preview new material that will see release in the fall. Mario Cuomo – “The Nice Guy”

posted by Oscar July 24, 2015

Mario Cuomo - The Nice Guy

Lead singer of The Orwells Mario Cuomo had been teasing throughout the week that he was in the studio working on something and today we get the first peek with new song “The Nice Guy.” This new track was uploaded to YouTube late last night and the music is very much an ode to the 1950s era of Rock & Roll.

The chorus effect on the guitar along with the falsetto vocals really takes you back. If you only listen to the music and Cuomo’s voice you’d think it was ripped out of an old jukebox, but the sinister artwork is more than enough to remind you that this song comes from the mind of the Elmhurst native. While it’s not exactly an Orwells tune, it’s worth noting that the band’s drummer and guitarist, Henry Brinner and Dominic Corso, respectively, provide the instrumentation heard on “The Nice Guy.”

Hear the new song below. Continue Reading
