Video: David Letterman Discusses The Orwells’ ‘Late Show’ Performance

posted by Oscar January 28, 2015

One of our favorite bands The Orwells made a splash when they made their American TV debut on Lettermanso much so that David Letterman himself still remembers it fondly. While appearing on last night’s Regis Philbin-hosted episode of the Late Late Show, Letterman and band leader Paul Shaffer were discussing their favorite moments and went as far as pointing out that Orwells performance as one of those that stand out above the rest.

The whole story and how he talks about it shows the impact that a great band with a brilliant sound can have on people. Letterman tops it off saying “After all these years, something like that really tickles me,” Letterman said of the performance.” See it below. Continue Reading

The Orwells – Live From Electrical Audio

posted by Oscar August 7, 2014

The Orwells Live from Electrical Audio

Earlier this year, The Orwells released one of our favorite records of 2014 with Disgraceland and this week they’ve released a collection of some cuts from that album for an EP of live recordings at Electrical Audio. The EP (Live From Electrical Audio) consists of live studio versions of songs, “The Righteous One,” “Dirty Sheets,” “Let It Burn,” “Who Needs You,” and “Southern Comfort.”

These live versions are pretty similar to what you’d be able to hear at a show of theirs, gritty vocals and perfectly fuzzy guitars but minus the moshing. Hear it by clicking over to Beats Music.

POD Exclusive Interview: The Orwells Talk New Album ‘Disgraceland’

posted by Oscar May 29, 2014

The Orwells - Disgraceland

The Orwells are set to release their new album Disgraceland this coming June 3rd and we reached out to them to get a better look into the making of their sophomore record. The band has created plenty of buzz for themselves and this album by touring the nation with Twin Peaks and largely thanks to their famous Letterman performance, making Disgraceland something that everyone is keeping a close eye on in hopes that it delivers on the hype. At first glance, I can tell you that it definitely does.

I got a hold of guitarist Matt O’Keefe to talk about their writing process, the producers they worked with and the meaning behind calling it Disgraceland. You can stream the album on Spotify before its official release and read our full interview below. Continue Reading

The Orwells - Disgraceland

One of the albums we have been most interested in hearing full this year has been The Orwells’ new LP, Disgraceland. Premiering on none other than Rolling Stone, the album is now available for streaming for a week before its official June 3 release. We’ve already posted some cuts from the album like “Southern Comfort,” “The Righteous One,” “Let It Burn” and their breakthrough hit, “Who Needs You.”

From the looks of it, this is already more than just a solid album and it just might be what catapults them onto the mainstream and help bring back that excitement for Rock & Roll. Hear it below. Continue Reading

Video: The Orwells – “Who Needs You” Live on ‘Letterman’

posted by Oscar January 16, 2014

The Orwells made their American network TV debut on none other than Late Show with David Letterman. That performance, to say the least, was badass! The guitars were sounding a tad bit more distorted to give it a more raw/dirtier finish and lead singer Mario Cuomo played the part of a classic “frontman” like I hadn’t seen in years. Letterman himself was more than impressed and so was Paul Schaffer, so stick around till the very end of the video to see their reaction.

Don’t miss them when they tour the country this coming March-April. Details HERE.

2013 has been a good one for us and we’ve decided to close out the year a little differently from now on… We’ve compiled our lists of the dopest things that came out these last 12 months and we’re sharing with you all what we liked the most in 2013, including lists for the best albums and our favorite live shows we attended. Video: The Orwells – “Who Needs You” Live on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’

posted by Oscar November 6, 2013

Yesterday (11/5) The Orwells went on BBC 2’s Later… with Jools Holland to play their latest EP’s title track and lead single, “Who Needs You.” The Chicago area band put on a damn good performance to further prove why these guys are generating such a buzz here and especially across the pond.

See that performance above. If you’re in the UK or any of the countries where you’re able to see BBC 2 videos, see it here.

Video: The Orwells – “Who Needs You”

The Orwells - Who Needs You

My favorite new band is, without a doubt, The Orwells. This band of teens from the Chicago suburbs are doing big things and seem destined for success. Now, just days before performing at Lolla 2013, The Orwells have released their new video (directed by Eddie O’Keefe) for their latest single “Who Needs You.” The video features the band performing with a screen in the background that features historical images projected, including images of the Chicago flag (as seen above), Elvis, Nixon and Frederick Douglas.

This excerpt from the original post on NPR (on which it premiered) is pretty cool:

Speaking of the history shown in the historic images flashing behind the band in the “Who Needs You” video, guitarist Matt O’Keefe admits that his education on the subject matter is limited: “Our political knowledge ranges from what we were taught in junior-year U.S. history class — meaning that all we are really sure of is that Abraham Lincoln was a good guy, and that Bill Clinton got head in the Oval Office.”

But he also says the song captures a much more innate feeling, and that it doesn’t take history books to understand what “Who Needs You” is about: “The millions of people who had their history written for them, and how they felt they couldn’t escape it. It’s about being told what to do, about being told what to believe in — which is, in a nutshell, the story of America’s youth.”
