Dopest Albums - 2014

It’s that time of year again when we come together and celebrate the year that was, highlighting the best that came out of 2014. Chicago proved once more to be a fruitful city for the music world, providing some excellent projects in Hip Hop and Rock.

Because a mixtape is as much a representation of an artist’s vision as any album released via a record label, we’ve bypassed making separate lists and given both their due within one comprehensive list. So now, hit the jump to see the best 2K14 had to offer. Continue Reading

Video: The Orwells – “Norman”

posted by Oscar November 3, 2014

The Orwells premiered their latest music video on Halloween and the visuals definitely kept in line with what the darkest of holidays is all about. The Stephen Sotor-directed video is for “Norman,” which guitarist Matt O’Keefe told us was one of his favorite tracks on Disgracland in our interview with him, is gory and scary movie-like. The house party gone wrong visuals reflect a lot of the lyrics from the song, and it only gets better when you see how it all plays out.

The Orwells – Live From Electrical Audio

posted by Oscar August 7, 2014

The Orwells Live from Electrical Audio

Earlier this year, The Orwells released one of our favorite records of 2014 with Disgraceland and this week they’ve released a collection of some cuts from that album for an EP of live recordings at Electrical Audio. The EP (Live From Electrical Audio) consists of live studio versions of songs, “The Righteous One,” “Dirty Sheets,” “Let It Burn,” “Who Needs You,” and “Southern Comfort.”

These live versions are pretty similar to what you’d be able to hear at a show of theirs, gritty vocals and perfectly fuzzy guitars but minus the moshing. Hear it by clicking over to Beats Music.

Video: The Orwells: “The Righteous One” Live on ‘Letterman’

posted by Oscar June 11, 2014

Last night The Orwells made their way back to the Late Show with David Letterman to promote the release of their new album, Disgraceland. The song of choice this time around was “The Righteous One,” which has an excellent buildup with an infectious bass line that worked perfectly on the small screen stage and impressed Letterman once more.

Album Review: The Orwells – ‘Disgraceland’

posted by Oscar June 3, 2014

The Orwells - Disgraceland

Suburban Chicago band The Orwells have now released their highly-anticipated sophomore album Disgraceland. The band had built up to its release by dropping songs like “Southern Comfort” and “Dirty Sheets,” and the one that really put them on the map was “Who Needs You,” but now that we got our hands on the full project we see that Mario Cuomo-fronted outfit had a lot more to offer. Video: The Orwells – “North Ave.”

posted by Oscar June 2, 2014

The Orwells are set to release their second album, Disgraceland tomorrow, June 3 and today the Elmhurst natives have unveiled their new video for “North Ave” via NPR. The video, much like the song itself, is very retro with its generations old handheld camera footage showcasing the suburban “disgraceland” they are surrounded by and call home.

The Orwells - Disgraceland

The Orwells are set to release their new album Disgraceland this coming June 3rd and we reached out to them to get a better look into the making of their sophomore record. The band has created plenty of buzz for themselves and this album by touring the nation with Twin Peaks and largely thanks to their famous Letterman performance, making Disgraceland something that everyone is keeping a close eye on in hopes that it delivers on the hype. At first glance, I can tell you that it definitely does.

I got a hold of guitarist Matt O’Keefe to talk about their writing process, the producers they worked with and the meaning behind calling it Disgraceland. You can stream the album on Spotify before its official release and read our full interview below. Continue Reading
