Dopest Albums - 2014

It’s that time of year again when we come together and celebrate the year that was, highlighting the best that came out of 2014. Chicago proved once more to be a fruitful city for the music world, providing some excellent projects in Hip Hop and Rock.

Because a mixtape is as much a representation of an artist’s vision as any album released via a record label, we’ve bypassed making separate lists and given both their due within one comprehensive list. So now, hit the jump to see the best 2K14 had to offer. Continue Reading

Video: The Black Keys – “Weight Of Love” [NSFW]

posted by Oscar August 14, 2014

Peep the latest video by The Black Keys for their song, “Weight Of Love.” The visuals, directed by Theo Wenner, pick up where the “Fever” video left off with a prompt for “donations” by Dan Auerbach’s preacher character then cuts to a group of (frequently topless) women doing cult-y stuff like a series of exercise routines, caring for children in a weird way, and sleeping in a big, common room. The robe-like uniform is basically what makes this appear to be more than what it seems. It’s strange from time to time but it’s finished off with a touch of quality worthy of a short film of sorts.

Video: The Black Keys Perform on ‘Letterman’

posted by Oscar May 13, 2014

On the eve of the official release of their latest album, Turn Blue, The Black Keys went on The Late Show with David Letterman to play some songs and did so outside the studios of the iconic Ed Sullivan Theater. Above you can see lead single, “Fever,” which works excellently in this unique setting. Another one of the tracks that really captivated me from this new album is “It’s Up To You Now,” with a cool retro sound that builds excellently, can be seen below. Continue Reading

Album Review: The Black Keys – ‘Turn Blue’

The Black Keys - Turn Blue

Rock music is not the biggest thing in the mainstream these days but it definitely isn’t due to a lack of talent, and The Black Keys are definitely at the forefront of the biggest acts of the genre that demonstrate that’s not the problem. Their latest album, Turn Blue, was produced by DJ Danger Mouse and from my assessment, it definitely lives up to the hype and it is indeed one of the best releases so far that will undoubtedly appear on our year-end list of the best albums of 2014. Video: The Black Keys Live on ‘SNL’

posted by Oscar May 11, 2014

The Black Keys played SNL last night to support next week’s release of Turn Blue and they absolutely rocked their late night set. The first track performed was lead single, “Fever” (above), which sounded damn well thanks to the added bravado that comes with live performances, while “Bullet In The Brain” (below) was another example of the band’s great ability to blend the Blues with Rock and just how well that works in a live setting.

Plus seeing the energy with which Pat Carney plays drums is always entertaining. Continue Reading

The Black Keys Prank Call Their Record Label

posted by Oscar May 3, 2014

The Black Keys are one of our favorite bands not only for their awesome music but also for their quirky sense of humor, and this week the band showed another example of that with a five-minute video they shared on YouTube of several prank calls they recently pulled on their record label. Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney made multiple attempts with the A&R departments at Nonesuch and Atlantic Records as a new-age band called Quartzazium. The whole thing is ridiculous and hilarious all in one and you can hear it above.

The Black Keys’ new album Turn Blue will be released May 13th. Pre-order the album at http://theblackkeys.com or iTunes and receive the single “Fever” and “Turn Blue” instantly.

The Black Keys – “Bullet In The Brain”

posted by Oscar May 1, 2014

The Black Keys - Turn Blue

Not only did we get a new video from the Keys for “Fever” today, but thanks to last night’s BBC Radio 1’s appearance with Zane Lowe, we also get a new track in “Bullet In The Brain.” This song’s driven by a cool bass-line that really comes to life when the guitar and drums appear in full for the chorus. This Danger Mouse-produced album is sounding better and better with every new look at it.

The Black Keys will play Saturday Night Live on the 10th, just days before the May 13th release of Turn Blue. Hear “Bullet In The Brain” below. Continue Reading

Video: The Black Keys – “Fever”

posted by Oscar May 1, 2014

We’re just a couple of weeks away from the release of The Black Keys’ latest album and today we get their video for the lead single, “Fever.” Directed by Theo Wenner, the visuals show the band sweatily preaching with Bible in hand the words to “Fever” and reaction shots from the crowd. The number at the bottom and video quality looks like it’s made perfectly for public access TV, and the ending makes the video come full circle. See it above.

The Black Keys’ new album Turn Blue will be released May 13th. Pre-order the album at http://theblackkeys.com or iTunes and receive the single “Fever” and “Turn Blue” instantly http://www.smarturl.it/turnblue

Video: The Black Keys – “Fever” [Live on ‘Later… with Jools Holland’]

posted by Oscar April 30, 2014

The Black Keys are set to release their follow-up to El Camino this coming May 13 and they helped promote it by playing the lead single, “Fever” on BBC 2’s Later… with Jools Holland. The performance stays true to the groovy studio version from Turn Blue, serving as a good indication that it will be awesome heard live.

The band also played a hit from the last album in “Gold On The Ceiling,” which was dirty and drenched in sloppiness in the best way possible. See that below. Continue Reading
