Recap: Joseph Chilliams @ Lincoln Hall

posted by Rosario Edwards January 13, 2018

Lincoln Hall was full of good vibes last night as Joseph Chilliams and company took the stage.

First of the female rap duo Mother Nature took the stage and brought the crowds energy way up. Their style is unique in that they are both socially conscious as well as in your face and the vibe was downright fun. Not that those things are mutually exclusive but to see two MC’s on stage talking about society’s problems while making the crowd bounce and groove is a rare site. Continue Reading

Album Stream: Supa Bwe Releases ‘Finally Dead’

posted by Oscar December 6, 2017

After much anticipation, Supa Bwe has finally unleashed his latest album. The 16-track Finally Dead includes features from Xavier Omär, JuJu, Saba, and UG Vavy on bonus track “Hating On Me.”

We’ve been fans of this guy since we saw him perform in this empty corner store type of place by Humboldt Park so many years ago, so seeing this project come to light is exciting for that alone. Now, after hearing what he’s put together, it’s safe to say that Supa (Supaaaaaa) will continue to be one of the dopest artists coming up in Chicago.

POD Photos: Aminé at the Metro (#30DaysInChicago)

posted by Oscar November 24, 2017

Our latest venture into the world of Red Bull Sound Select’s  concert series, we headed back to the Metro for Day 18, featuring Aminé, Pell, and A2. In the building along with me was my very dope POD comrade, Ellie, who was helping capture the vibes that night.

The night was ripe for headliner Aminé to demonstrate why he’s widely considered one of the best new names in the game, and the Portland man delivered. The Good For You cover art inspired a photo op  in the balcony, with fans able to sit on a blue toilet as an all-yellow background completed the scene.

Aminé showed off his charm right from the start, which included a mashup cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” at the beginning of his set. For banter in between songs, he asked people to raise their hands and use their fingers to show the number of times they’ve pronounced his name wrong only to laugh at what he saw in the crowd.

posted by Oscar August 30, 2017

Saba is helping us revisit Jamila Woods’ breakthrough project HEAVN by sharing a remix of one of its songs: “Emerald Street.” The track, which was originally produced by Peter Cottontale and actually features Saba himself, so it only makes sense why this one left an itch on the Pivot Gang member to reimagine it someday.

Saba flipped that original production and give it his own dope spin. Hear the remix below. Continue Reading

Event: Silent Party Music To Play First Headline Show on August 3

posted by Oscar July 24, 2017

We’re very happy to share the news with y’all that our good friends of Silent Party Music, Chicago’s crew of live musicians that play for some (a lot, actually) of your favorite artists, will be putting on their own showcase next month, and it will be one you won’t want to miss. If you’re a fan of Jamila Woods, Noname, Smino, LEGIT, Saba, Omen, Alex Wiley, and Eryn Allen Kane, and you’ve seen them live in the last couple years, then you’ve seen and enjoyed the band that is Silent Party Music.

The showcase is a bit secretive right now as the band doesn’t want to ruin the dope things they’ve got cooking up for this, but I can assure you that when they say “very special guests” that they seriously mean it. What we can confirm is that Elton Aura, Luke Titus, and Isaiah G will help open up the show, while DJ Dam Dam and DJ MightDoSumn will be providing the vibes.

It all kicks off at 8pm on August 3 at Emporium in Wicker Park…. Oh yeah, and it’s FREE!

Seriously, this is going to be beyond dope. Be there.

Stream Phoelix’s New Project: ‘GSPL’

posted by Oscar July 18, 2017

Phoelix has been a homie of us here at POD for a while now and after seeing him play live for Eryn Allen Kane and Noname, along with his contributing to projects by the latter plus Saba and Smino, peppering in solo releases here and there, we are glad to share with y’all today his debut EP, GSPL. The 7-track effort is the result of this artist/producer’s massive growth in his still relatively young career, bearing the fruits of his creativity for all to hear.

The experimental production here is a real highlight, mixing Industrial and other futuristic elements with the genre that provides the project its namesake, Phoelix elevates his game to greater heights as he turns into the protagonist now and takes a well-deserved leap into the spotlight. “Red Beans & Rice,” “Heartless Sonata,” and “Half & Half” are some of the gems you’ll find here.

POD Photos: SXSW 2017 – Day 3 feat. French Montana, Cam’ron, Noname, Warm Brew

posted by Oscar March 22, 2017

Day 3 of SXSW 2017 was packed with dope showcases throughout downtown Austin, which helped give us that much more to choose from regarding the artists we’d want to see for the night… but that also made it so much more difficult to decide on an action plan because the lineups were insane pretty much everywhere, so having to choose the right showcase carried so much more weight.

But that’s when it helps to have a squad in ATX, so while I went over to the House Of Vans/Fake Shore Drive showcase at the Mohawk that boasted a stacked lineup of some of Chicago’s best talent plus French Montana headlining, Alex and Alberto (AKA ) made their way to Easy Tiger for TuneIn’s that featured none other than Dipset’s own, Cam’ron!

Take a look at the highlights of Day 3 of SXSW below. Continue Reading
