POD Exclusive: Black Pistol Fire Talk To Us About Their New Album, Chicago Music at Riot Fest 2017

posted by Oscar September 26, 2017

Riot Fest 2017 left us with some great memories thanks to performances from acts like Nine Inch Nails, Queens Of The Stone Age, Vic Mensa, and Black Pistol Fire. That last band, the Austin-based Canadian duo, actually met with us for an exclusive interview after they played Day 2 of the festival.

During our chat we discussed their new album Deadbeat Graffiti and its potential comparisons to Sgt. Peppers, their approach to playing Riot Fest, and Chicago music. Also look out for guitarist and lead vocalist Kevin’s example of an album that was pretty “meh” but that had some decent tunes.

Check it out above.

POD Photos: Riot Fest 2017 – Day 1 feat. Vic Mensa, Action Bronson, Death From Above, Warm Brew

posted by Oscar September 18, 2017

Riot Fest 2017 is officially in the books, delivering 3 days of dope performances to make it one of our favorite editions yet. With a lineup as stacked as this one, Day 1 definitely kicked things off to a great start. We checked out a pretty diverse collection of acts here, including the band X (celebrating its 40th anniversary), Vic Mensa, Action Bronson, Death From Above, Saul Williams, Buzzcocks, and Warm Brew…

Of course I caught Nine Inch Nails’ headlining set (frontrunner for my favorite performance), but we couldn’t access the photo pit and so we resorted to just hitting the crowd and be among the masses. To be completely honestly, that’s the best way to enjoy this band.

Check out our gallery for Day 1 below. Continue Reading

12 Artists to See at Riot Fest 2017

posted by Oscar September 12, 2017

It’s Riot Fest week!! The Chicago festival is best known for putting together some of the nation’s best lineups year after year, bringing back iconic bands for special reunions along the way, and the 2017 edition is right up there among their best ever.

We’ve been attending the Punk-rooted festival since 2011 and this year’s going to be a bit different for us, as it marks the first time we’re attending as part of the press. So instead of sneaking our way to the front rails to see the action up-front or hopping from mosh pit to mosh pit, we’ll be bouncing around all of Douglas Park this weekend to take in all it’s got to offer and taking photography of the artists we are most eager to see from this lineup.

We’ve put together a list of some of our favorite artists on the lineup that we are looking forward to seeing perform live at Riot Fest 2017. Check out the can’t-miss acts below.

Joey Badass on the Rise Stage

Joey Badass on the Rise Stage

Sunday kicked off with beautiful weather and excellent performances from Billy Talent, Juliette and the Licks, Thursday, Andrew W.K, and The Wonder Years.

Unfortunately the Joey Badass performance was marred by audio difficulties, but Joey still soldiered through to perform “Christ Conscious” and some new bangers.

The Deftones brought their own unique atmosphere to the show.

Sleater Kinney on the Rock Stage

The evening was filled with epic performances, including Sleater Kinney. With a dazzling light show, and stage prescence like no other, the all female band proved why they’ve been called one of the best rock bands of the last two decades. After their long hiatus it was a treat to see them performing with such energy, and enthusiasm. Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker, and Janet Wise absolutely killed it. Continue Reading

Recap: The Best of Riot Fest 2016, Day One

Flaming Lips on the Riot Stage

Starting in 2005 as a multi-venue Chicago based festival, Riot Fest has since grown to a multi city festival showcasing current and past Punk, Rock and Hip Hop Acts.

It has long been a POD favorite thanks to the outstanding lineups, and the excellent crowd atmosphere that can sometimes be missing from larger festivals like Lollapalooza. This years’ lineup boasted the likes of Rob Zombie, Nas, Morissey, The Flaming Lips, and the first reunion of The original Lineup of The Misfits in nearly 20 years.

Friday was the perfect kick off to the festival, with an excellent mix of punk/hardcore standouts as well as indie favorites, it had something for everyone. Continue Reading
