Top 12 Acts of Pitchfork Music Festival 2017

posted by Oscar July 20, 2017

Pitchfork Music Festival 2017 was definitely among one of the best editions of the Chicago installment of the festival. Three days full of artists doing what they do best, and we were in attendance scoping out Union Park to see what #P4kfest had in store for us.

What we got in return was awesome performances, some that will likely be on my year-end list of the best performances I saw this year. From icons to fast-rising up-and-comers, the eclectic balance at this festival had plenty to offer right from when the first acts hit the stage.

Check out our list of the best acts we see over the last weekend. Continue Reading

POD Photos: Kehlani & Her ‘SweetSexySavage Tour’ in Austin, TX

posted by Ruben May 26, 2017

It had been 1 year since I last saw Kehlani perform during “The SXSW Takeover” in 2016. After that show, I was really able to see how “Baelani” has grown such a strong fan base. She is not only an incredible performer, but she also loves spreading positive messages that show how much she really does care about the happiness of others. This is why as soon as I found out she was coming to Austin for her #SSSTour, I knew I had to go see her.

The concert took place at Emo’s, a venue she thanks for being a part of her success since it was one of the venues that saw her perform in her very first tour. Reminiscing on that previous concert, Kehlani painted a picture to the audience describing how small her show was then versus this sold-out night where her fans know every single word of her lyrics. This tour didn’t just come with new music from her Sweet Sexy Savage album, but it also came with a purpose.

For this tour, Kehlani started a “We Need Us” drive that pairs up with local organizations and/or shelters in the cities that are part of the tour. At the concert, she had drop-off boxes for people that come out to donate items such as clothes or hygiene products. Donating wasn’t the full message though, Kehlani wants to help inspire her fans to take initiative in helping their own community. Kehlani teased her Austin fans by saying she would move to Austin someday, and I honestly can’t wait to see her be a part of the ATX community.

Video: Check Out Our Exclusive Interview with Marian Hill

posted by Oscar May 16, 2017

Another one!… The latest POD interview we’d like to share with y’all was one of the 10 we held down in Austin, TX, this time being the Alternative Pop group Marian Hill.

Our conversation took us many places, including discussing the making of their video for “Down,” the added value in having their music featured on an Apple commercial, their appreciation and use of Jazz, and why they’ve partnered with the Plus 1 for their latest tour.

For the “Speed Round” they answered our signature questions like first album they ever purchased, fave music video, and the ATX-specific pulled pork vs. brisket debate. My favorites were their take on “old Kanye vs. new Kanye” and Samantha’s response to my cheeky question that references their “One Time.” See that short clip below. Continue Reading

POD Photos: Smino in Houston on the ‘Swanita Tour’

posted by Ruben May 16, 2017

This past weekend I was given the opportunity to join Smino and his team when the Swanita Tour hit Houston, TX. The St. Louis native has quickly become one of the most noteworthy figures coming out of the Chicago scene, so it only made sense that the tour kickoff in his adoptive hometown (covered by the POD team) included many highlights that demonstrated this man’s major star appeal, helping pave the way for a guest appearance by T-Pain when they performed in Atlanta.

It was crazy to see the level of energy he can bring even after the injury he got on just the second show of his tour. Lounging backstage, Smino posed for a couple shots for me, with crutches and all. His presence was just as potent onstage as it is off it; you can see it clearly in these photos.

He is doing music his own way and I have not heard anything similar to what he offers, and you shouldn’t miss him live.

See the pictures below.

POD Photos: SXSW 2017 – Day 5 feat. Nardwuar, Snoop Dogg, T.I.

posted by Oscar March 24, 2017

For our last day at SXSW 2017 we decided to get education on so we headed over to the convention center to take in some panels by some of the brightest and dopest minds in the industry. We started the day off with Zane Lowe speaking on the enduring importance of radio, and how it has evolved throughout the generations. We followed that by checking out the gawd Nardwuar who dropped some gems about how to prep for and conduct dope interviews (I even got to do the “Doot Doo” pose with him!).

The penultimate panel we attended included Snoop Dogg advocating for criminal justice reform, joining Weldon Angelos, Vikrant Reddy (Charles Koch Institute), and Mark Holden (Koch Industries) in a group conversation. Finally, we got to see Sway interview T.I., who had was showing us his new short film in which he plays multiple characters that all get affected by a police officer shooting a black child.

POD Photos: SXSW 2017 – Day 4 feat. Migos, Weezer, Lil Yachty

posted by Oscar March 23, 2017

Our last full day of shows down at SXSW 2017 simply had to be completely worthwhile, and it sure as hell did live up to that expectation.

The only thing that really mattered was the fact that Migos were headlining at the YouTube showcase, and that was all the information we needed to guide our plans for that Friday. The main event had the trio behind the biggest track around, “Bad and Boujee,” continue their hot streak with yet another stellar performance to cement their spot as one of the most popular acts in the nation.

Down at Brazos Hall, New Politics put on a show that was dope enough to convince the crowd that they would’ve been just as thrilled if the Danish outfit had been the headlining band. Crowdsurfing, parting the pit to make room for flips by lead singer David Boyd and even a cover of the Beastie Boys; these guys really had it all… Though that’s not to say actual headliners Weezer didn’t hit the stage to remind everyone in attendance exactly how much they Rock. A greatest hits setlist that also boasted newly-released song “Feels Like Summer,” easily helped them land on our list of best of the fest.

Check our Day 4 pics after the jump.  Continue Reading

POD Photos: SXSW 2017 – Day 3 feat. French Montana, Cam’ron, Noname, Warm Brew

posted by Oscar March 22, 2017

Day 3 of SXSW 2017 was packed with dope showcases throughout downtown Austin, which helped give us that much more to choose from regarding the artists we’d want to see for the night… but that also made it so much more difficult to decide on an action plan because the lineups were insane pretty much everywhere, so having to choose the right showcase carried so much more weight.

But that’s when it helps to have a squad in ATX, so while I went over to the House Of Vans/Fake Shore Drive showcase at the Mohawk that boasted a stacked lineup of some of Chicago’s best talent plus French Montana headlining, Alex and Alberto (AKA ) made their way to Easy Tiger for TuneIn’s that featured none other than Dipset’s own, Cam’ron!

Take a look at the highlights of Day 3 of SXSW below. Continue Reading

POD Photos: SXSW 2017 – Day 2 feat. Spoon, Aminé, Jain

posted by Oscar March 21, 2017

Day 2 of SXSW was a hell of a busy one, filled with interviews during the day (stay tuned) and some dope shows at night. While the sun was still out and shining, we headed over to YouTube’s showcase where we caught impressive sets from JAIN and Aminé. Afterwards, we headed over to The Main at 6th St to take in one of Spoon’s hometown residencies this week for the festival, which included a performance from surprise special guests !!!.

Spoon for their part were spectacular at the venue at they temporarily renamed (nicknamed) Eno’s, playing a set that boasted songs from throughout their career, including the lead single/title track for their new album, “Hot Thoughts.” This band is something special, and getting the chance to see them in an intimate venue like this, is what makes SXSW a can’t-miss event.
