Event: Silent Party Music To Play First Headline Show on August 3

posted by Oscar July 24, 2017

We’re very happy to share the news with y’all that our good friends of Silent Party Music, Chicago’s crew of live musicians that play for some (a lot, actually) of your favorite artists, will be putting on their own showcase next month, and it will be one you won’t want to miss. If you’re a fan of Jamila Woods, Noname, Smino, LEGIT, Saba, Omen, Alex Wiley, and Eryn Allen Kane, and you’ve seen them live in the last couple years, then you’ve seen and enjoyed the band that is Silent Party Music.

The showcase is a bit secretive right now as the band doesn’t want to ruin the dope things they’ve got cooking up for this, but I can assure you that when they say “very special guests” that they seriously mean it. What we can confirm is that Elton Aura, Luke Titus, and Isaiah G will help open up the show, while DJ Dam Dam and DJ MightDoSumn will be providing the vibes.

It all kicks off at 8pm on August 3 at Emporium in Wicker Park…. Oh yeah, and it’s FREE!

Seriously, this is going to be beyond dope. Be there.

Stream Phoelix’s New Project: ‘GSPL’

posted by Oscar July 18, 2017

Phoelix has been a homie of us here at POD for a while now and after seeing him play live for Eryn Allen Kane and Noname, along with his contributing to projects by the latter plus Saba and Smino, peppering in solo releases here and there, we are glad to share with y’all today his debut EP, GSPL. The 7-track effort is the result of this artist/producer’s massive growth in his still relatively young career, bearing the fruits of his creativity for all to hear.

The experimental production here is a real highlight, mixing Industrial and other futuristic elements with the genre that provides the project its namesake, Phoelix elevates his game to greater heights as he turns into the protagonist now and takes a well-deserved leap into the spotlight. “Red Beans & Rice,” “Heartless Sonata,” and “Half & Half” are some of the gems you’ll find here.

Chance The Rapper Shares Music Video For “Same Drugs,” with Vocals from Eryn Allen Kane and John Legend

posted by Oscar February 6, 2017

Chance The Rapper has released the music video to Coloring Book highlight, “Same Drugs.” One thing that’s also worth noting is that this is an alternate version of the song you hear on the original stream. This version has a more pronounced vocal performance from lady Eryn Allen Kane, and it also features the voices of singers like John Legend, Yebba, Francis Starlite, and Macie Stewart (AKA Mace God to the POD family).

The Jake Schreier-directed clip is worth seeing overall with its portrayal of Chano and the puppets with which he performed at his Magnificent Coloring Day concert/fest at Sox field last year, but it’s the fresh version of the song that helps make it that much more of a can’t-miss.

Chance premiered the visuals earlier today through a broadcast on Facebook Live. Check it out above.

Album Review: Our Top 5 Songs on ‘Coloring Book,’ by Chance The Rapper

posted by Oscar May 18, 2016

Chance The Rapper Chance 3

The long anticipation for a new project from Chance The Rapper finally ended when the Chicago man unleashed Coloring Book to the masses last week on May 12 of this year. Chano has been making a name for himself outside of his hometown for quite some time now, conquering the Hip Hop game year after year since Acid Rap dropped thanks to his work on collaborative projects like Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment’s Surf and a key role in the making of Kanye West’s The Life Of Pabloplus headlining music festivals like Lollapalooza (back-to-back!) and Pitchfork.

First off, let me say a little bit about Coloring Book as a whole. This should be considered a mixtape by name only, because it is an outright album by all other definitions. The songwriting, the production, the finesse, the swagger, the gravitas. Coloring Book has all of the elements of a full-fledged major record label release, somehow packaged as a mixtape on the biggest online music retailer because only Chance The Rapper can pull off something like that. This project is a defining moment in the career of young Chance. He has ascended to the pinnacle of the Hip Hop game with the album also nicknamed #Chance3, proving with each track his artistic depth, his penchant for masterful lyricism, and an effortless ability to craft timeless rhymes. This is the culmination of an unrelenting vision first conjured up by a young man from the Southside of Chicago, now standing among the elite of the genre.

I won’t do this album justice by simply naming 5 songs that are worth hearing. This album is more than that; the whole mixtape plays more like one big highlight reel. Coloring Book not only deserves your undivided attention, but it demands it with each passing track. Immerse yourself in its genre-bending glory to truly experience what this artistic work aims to accomplish. However, for the sake of this review, we’re simply pointing out the joints that stood out the most on an individual basis. These are the tracks that got revisited time and again for one listening session to the next; these are the songs that have earned themselves the right to hit our eardrums just little bit louder than the rest.

So hit the jump and see what are our Top 5 favorite songs on Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book. Continue Reading

Recap: Eryn Allen Kane at City Winery – Chicago

posted by Oscar February 22, 2016

Last Friday I was able to attend what could very well be one of the most important shows in the ascending career of Detroit native, Chicago-based singer Eryn Allen Kane. Eryn has quickly risen to be one of the hottest acts in our city thanks to collaborations with high-profile artists like Chance The Rapper and Prince, so when EAK announced her first live show would take place to celebrate the release of her EPs Aviary: Act I and Aviary: Act II, it was an instant can’t-miss show for the year. Eryn came out at City Winery-Chicago with full intention to woo us with her big, luxurious hair and a captivating red gown, but soon after going into her opening number she (almost symbolically) removed her heels to continue the show on her own two feet, allowing her voice to be the center of attention without having to stress her body to present herself like any other songstress out there.

The crowd was a cool mix of family, friends, musicians, and tens of fans excited to hear live renditions of the Soulful R&B music that’s helping Eryn get national acclaim. The set included a mix of her own Aviary tracks, like “Slipping,” “How Many Times,” and “Have Mercy,” along with tracks that came out of the Motor City’s Motown heyday like Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and a Stevie Wonder song (I’m thinking “Living In The City,” but I can’t completely assert that my mind is doing me right with that). Miss Kane showed off her vocal prowess, her effortless charisma, and a stage presence that will soon enough be conquering cities across every corner of the globe. At one point she jokingly advised the crowd to chant “one more song” so that she can experience the whole encore moment, for which left and immediately came back to the stage to perform “Have Mercy.” In what’s surely going to become a classic EAK moment, the singer giggled after that performance to slightly embarrassingly admit that they actually had one more song left… So she prompted us to once more give her the “one more song” chant, and we all happily obliged. New Project: Eryn Allen Kane – ‘Aviary: Act II’

posted by Oscar February 2, 2016

eryn allen kane -aviary act 2_cover

On the same day that she graces the cover of the RedEyeEryn Allen Kane now has released her latest project Aviary: Act II. Now that her debut project is complete, it’s fair to see her propelled to even greater heights thanks to a collection of songs that will give you life like few things out there can.

Act II brings a whole new collection of songs, off which we had only heard the powerful protest song “How Many Times.” Our early assessment of Act II is that it’s an excellent counterpart to Act IThis batch complements the original four by bringing forth Eryn’s more soulful side, drawing from Gospel and early R&B, sounding like a contemporary of Aretha and Stevie Wonder. I’ll tell you this much, put these Aviary EPs together and you’ve got yourself one of the dopest records of the year.
