Calez - Still Good

Yo yo yo, this one’s got me feeling on top of the world right now! Calez dropped his latest joint “Still Good,” which premiered on Ebro’s Beats 1 Radio show.

The backing beat from Rollie is luscious af, and you won’t soon be getting that out of your head! So damn good it’s making me propose a #StillGood challenge, and have rappers everywhere to use this instrumental to lay down something dope, as Calez and crew did here.

The track features stellar appearances from Chi all-stars Alex Wiley, Mick Jenkins, and Donnie Trumpet. Hear it below. Continue Reading

Video: Chance The Rapper Pays Tribute To Muhammad Ali at the ESPYs

posted by Oscar July 14, 2016

Chance The Rapper was recruited to pay tribute to the late Muhammad Ali at the ESPYs last night, and the all-time POD fave sure had something special for the onlooking masses. Chano’s spiritual vibes were the perfect fit for such an act of respect to the Greatest Of All Time, and he absolutely stole the show with his emotional and spine-tingling performance.

Backed by his trusty crew including Jamila Woods, Donnie Trumpet and Peter Cottontale plus Teddy Jackson, Chance delivered a new song that drew inspiration from the words of Ali himself. The soulful tune was beautiful and brilliant, empowered by soundbites of Ali speaking and taken to a spiritual level thanks to the gospel choir. The lyrics were pretty and creative, right in line with Ali’s own poetic triumphs. This quite honestly feels like the perfect way to honor such an awe-inspiring legend, and who better to make it happen than Chicago’s prodigal son.

Pursuit of Dopeness loves Jamila Woods… We’ve been waiting for this album for awhile now & we’re so excited it’s out for everyone to hear. Listening to this album feels completely magical. Woods writes odes to Chicago.. healing.. love & gives a voice to those in pain. Jamila reminds you how beautiful it is to be Black. Wood’s has made an album  completely full of beautiful songs. I’m completely in awe of this album. It’s raw, real and completely empowering. This album is so important for the culture right now. Wood’s is a true poet.. activist and beautiful musician.

“I won’t let you criticize my city like my skin.. it’s so pretty. If you don’t like it.. just leave it alone..”

-“LSD” ft. Chance The Rapper.

Jamila has stepped out & showed us she’s so much more than a guest on a song.

The album features from some of Chicago’s favorites such as NoName.. Chance The Rapper..Saba..Donnie Trumpet..& features production by Odd Couple ..Peter CottonTale & Nate Fox!

Jamila on “HEAVN”
HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in. I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight.

Please listen to “HEAVN” Continue Reading

Donnie Trumpet feat. Sima Cunningham – “In Your Light”

posted by Alberto April 23, 2016

Donnie Trumpet Sima Cunningham In Your Light

Donnie Trumpet recruits Sima Cunningham, who has made several appearances on POD, for his new release dedicated to Prince. For more on Donnie’s on love for Prince, check what he has to say below. Stream “In Your Light” below.

One of my best friends and musical mentors, Maceo from the band The Omys gave me a mix cd when i was going through a tough time with a song called Donna by Prince. I listened to the song over and over in the car. I never imported the cd, could only hear it in the car, so when i tried listening to it on tour i couldn’t find it anywhere. As you know Prince’s music is pretty rare on the internet but this song was especially elusive because it was a part of a compilation album of his “unfinished” music. This was a really powerful inspiration for me after having worked so hard on Surf and still having so much material left over that didn’t quite fit but still described my vision and passion of the era of making music when putting Surf together. Songs are like poems, they’re never done.
In honor of that song and all songs like it, and the earth claiming one of the greatest humans to ever grace its land, Prince…I dedicate this to everyone who will ever hear it. – Donnie Trumpet

Dopest Albums of 2015 – By Oscar

Dopest Albums 2015

For our final year-end list we’re doing things just a little bit differently. POD is a team of writers with our own particular set of interests, so instead of doing one list for the blog as a whole, we figured it’d be much better to highlight our own individual tastes by each dropping a list of our own for the Dopest Albums of the year.

My inclinations steer towards Rock and you’ll see my favorites of 2015 fully show that, but you’ll see a couple of other genres deservedly included here. So hit the jump and read MY list of the Dopest Albums of 2015. Continue Reading
