Album Review: Our Top 5 Songs on ‘City Club’ by The Growlers

posted by Oscar October 8, 2016

The Growlers - City Club

The Growlers released their new album City Club at the end of September, unleashing to the world their first project under Julian Casablancas’ Cult Records label. The band recruited Casablancas as a producer, but the lead singer of The Strokes was also called upon to lay some vocals on a couple of tracks on the album, and fans will be quick to point out that his influence is quite evident throughout City Club, for better or worse in the eyes of many listeners. The other big difference in the making of this new Growlers album came in a one-two punch including a personnel change that saw the departure of drummer Scott Montoya, and the album was, for the first time, credited to Brooks Nielsen and Matt Taylor as opposed to the whole band/The Growlers. These dynamic changes are definitely a factor in the direction taken with this album, though I will gladly place myself on the side that sees it favorably.

The Growlers are best known for their “Beach Goth” sound, spearheaded by lead singer Nielsen’s monotone vocals weaved into dark, psychedelic surf Rock compositions. For those expecting to hear a continuation of that sound, this album will not deliver on that so it’s understandable why there may be some detractors. But if you truly listen to this album and appreciate it for what it is and what it’s attempting to accomplish, as opposed to how it came about or what previous Growlers albums sound like, you’d find the new direction is hardly a faulty one. The Growlers went New Wave with a touch of Disco, and it’s fucking cool. So after a week of listening to the record in a variety of settings and under different circumstances, I’ve picked out the 5 songs that stand out the most to make City Club a must-hear album for Fall 2016. This wasn’t an easy task and if I had to write this post again tomorrow, my list could be totally different. Look below to find our picks and hit the comments section to list yours. Continue Reading

The Growlers Release ‘City Club’

posted by Oscar September 30, 2016

The Growlers - City Club

The Growlers have released their new album, City Club. The California band, pioneers of Beach Goth, worked on the album with The Strokes lead singer Julian Casablancas, who produced the album and is releasing it on his label Cult Records.

Casablancas didn’t just provide production on the album, also lending his vocals for a verse on glittery “Too Many Times.” City Club is made up of 13 tracks, including the previously released “I’ll Be Around,” “Night Ride,” and the titular song.

We were able to see the Growlers perform a lot of these new songs at their Chicago show last week at Thalia Hall. Check out our recap here.

The Growlers – “I’ll Be Around” (Prod. Julian Casablancas)

posted by Oscar September 9, 2016

The Growlers - City Club

The Growlers’ new album City Club is soon to arrive and today they have released a new cut from that record. The latest track is titled “I’ll Be Around” and this funky joint is another one from the project that was produced by The Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas. The bass line in this one will make you groove right from the start, and the big drums sound like they were inspired by JC’s Tyranny

Call me crazy, but this sounds a bit like Cumbia! When you combine those previously mentioned elements with the synths, you get mad Latin vibes that I’ll make you want to dance out of this one. I’m a DF dude, and I know Cumbia when I hear it… and because I’m a DF dude, I love me some Cumbia!

City Club is out 9/30 on Cult Records. Hear “I’ll Be Around” below. Continue Reading

Mexico City outfit Rey Pila today unleashed onto the world their pixellated, 8-bit arcade game quality music video for “Fire Away.” The entire clip looks like it was created to remind you of the sort of games at movie theaters way, way back in the day that would have made you beg your parents to give their spare change so you could throw down before your flick started.

Julian Casablancas + The Voidz Announce New Record, ‘Tyranny’

posted by Oscar June 23, 2014

After a brief return to his iconic band, The Strokes at this year’s Governors Ball in NYC, a few weeks ago, Julian Casablancas has released some new material with his side project along with The Voidz. The new album is called Tyranny and JC announced it as  a “protest record.”

Casablancas says in the official press release:

Tyranny has come in many forms throughout history. Now, the good of business is put above anything else, as corporations have become the new ruling body. Most decisions seem to be made like ones of a medieval king: whatever makes profit while ignoring and repressing the truth about whatever suffering it may cause (like pop music, for that matter).

You can see the new album’s teaser video above. See the new album artwork and upcoming dates below; pre-Order Tyranny for $3.87 on the Cult Records website now: http://bit.ly/jcvdz Continue Reading

FYF Fest 2014 Lineup feat. The Strokes, Phoenix, & HAIM

posted by Oscar May 16, 2014

FYF Fest 2014-poster

The Strokes back! This year’s inclusion of The Strokes on the Governors Ball lineup was a major surprise some months ago, but with a gig at the Capital Theatre and now FYF Fest 2014, it looks like the iconic NY band will be making their highly-anticipated return sooner rather than later.

As far as the rest of the lineup for this LA festival (August 23-24) goes, there are plenty of other big names to be excited about like Phoenix, HAIM, Earl Sweatshirt, Mac DeMarco and our up-and-coming guys, Twin Peaks. Other notable names on this list are Interpol, Run The Jewels, Blood Orange and solo sets from Strokes members Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond, Jr.

See the official poster with the daily breakdown of the full lineup above and get tickets/more info here.
