Pursuit of Dopeness loves Jamila Woods… We’ve been waiting for this album for awhile now & we’re so excited it’s out for everyone to hear. Listening to this album feels completely magical. Woods writes odes to Chicago.. healing.. love & gives a voice to those in pain. Jamila reminds you how beautiful it is to be Black. Wood’s has made an album  completely full of beautiful songs. I’m completely in awe of this album. It’s raw, real and completely empowering. This album is so important for the culture right now. Wood’s is a true poet.. activist and beautiful musician.

“I won’t let you criticize my city like my skin.. it’s so pretty. If you don’t like it.. just leave it alone..”

-“LSD” ft. Chance The Rapper.

Jamila has stepped out & showed us she’s so much more than a guest on a song.

The album features from some of Chicago’s favorites such as NoName.. Chance The Rapper..Saba..Donnie Trumpet..& features production by Odd Couple ..Peter CottonTale & Nate Fox!

Jamila on “HEAVN”
HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in. I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight.

Please listen to “HEAVN” Continue Reading

You might have just seen her on Jimmy Fallon with Chance The Rapper performing “Blessings.” When Jamila isn’t putting her beautiful touch on Chance’s songs she’s creating beautiful music of her own. The Closed Sessions artist just released “Heavn.” Jamila’s beautiful voice & lyrics over a Roots x J Dilla beat give you a real slice of heaven. “Heavn” speaks of an old real love.. Jamila connects with her roots bringing you a story and a trip through time. With the release of “Heavn” we’re getting excited for the songstress to release her solo album. We love listening to Jamila’s music & hear everything she’s working on.

Listen to “Heavn” here.

2016 has been very good for independent Chicago record label Closed Sessions and today it’s only getting better by being the focus of a segment on the beloved daytime Chi-Town TV show Windy City Live. Jamila Woods – “blk girl soldier”

posted by Oscar January 19, 2016

Jamila Woods - blk girl soldier

In exclusive announcement on Billboard, Jamila Woods announced that she’s signed with local indie label/purveyors of cool, Closed Sessions. RTC/Alex Fruchter said of landing the rising Chicago star: “Jamila Woods is an incredibly talented artist that also stands for something… Her addition to Closed Sessions brings great new music to the table, but also a personality and energy that we can all benefit and learn from.”

Along with that news, Jamila also released her new CS track “blk girl soldier,” produced by Jus Cuz and Saba. Speaking on the inspiration for the song, Woods declared:

I drew inspiration from a protest chant I learned at a Black Youth Project 100 meeting in Chicago… I love how music and chants were used in the Civil Rights movement to help people keep marching… I’m interested in figuring out what freedom songs would sound like in 2016. My hope is that ‘blk girl soldier’ is a freedom song for black women today who are fighting the macro and microagressions of daily life in our city/country/world.

You almost don’t know who to congratulate here, Closed Sessions for continuing to grow and align themselves with some of the best artists in the Chi, or to Jamila for continuing to make waves and releasing the first piece of her forthcoming project. Let’s go with both. Check out “blk girl soldier”after the jump. Continue Reading

A-Villa – The Colosseum (Featuring Big K.R.I.T., Termanology, Inspectah Deck)

posted by Alex October 7, 2014

WOW! A-Villa completely snapped with this joint! The Chicago native brought together three lyrical warriors, Big K.R.I.T., Termanology, and Inspectah Deck to “The Colosseum”. It looks like the homie DJ Scend did some work on the track as well. Make sure to circle November 4th on your calendar, as Carry On Tradition will be dropping via Closed Sessions. “The Colosseum” was premiered on XXL. and got A-Villa’s commentary on the track.

I met K.R.I.T. at a meet & greet before a show he had in Chicago. I introduced myself, told him about my project, and gave him a beat CD. The next day, I got an email with his verse over this particular beat, which I never would’ve thought K.R.I.T. would pick. But it shows his versatility as an artist and his ability to stand out on any type of record.  I then sent it to Termanology, who I’m a fan of and knew he would kill it. But I didn’t anticipate him laying down one of my favorite verses on the album.  Then with Inspectah Deck, I had sent him a different beat and asked for that “Triumph” & “Above The Clouds” type of feel, which he definitely delivered on and made it easy to tie everything together. However, I had lost the scratches I had previously done before my turntables broke. So at the last minute, I had the homie DJ Scend re-do what I had lost. However, he added his own flavor to it and even improved upon what I had originally intended.

Overall, I’m really proud of this song and love everything about it…the concept, the intro, the beat, the beat switch up, the verses, the DJ cuts, and outro. It’s just a hard rap record and is the essence of Hip Hop…good beats & rhymes.
