‘A People’s History of Chicago’ Gallery – Closing Reception

posted by Rosario Edwards May 24, 2017

Kevin Coval has written a book of poems about the history of the City of Chicago and the influence that hip hop has had on it throughout the centuries of its existence. He’s also put together an excellent gallery featuring work from artists that contributed to his book.

Tomorrow is the last night of that gallery, and your last chance to buy an exclusive piece of work from artists like Hebru Brantley, Paul Branton, Runsy, Bianca Pastel, and Troy Scat. As well as a chance to hear a reading from Kevin, Matt Muse, Lyriq the Mi$fit, and Patricia Frazier.

This book has received the blessings of Chance The Rapper, who has been greatly inspired by Kevin, and even wrote the Foreword to the book!

It’s a free event, and an awesome opportunity to see what this city really has to offer.

Chicago Truborn (1741 W Chicago Ave).

Thursday May 25 – Readings begin at 7:30

And be on the lookout for our PoD interview with Kevin, coming soon! The man is incredibly inspiring, and just breathes positivity.

Hola Chola Chicago Pop Up Shop Recap

posted by Alex April 4, 2017

Let us fill you in on what you missed out if you forgot to RSVP for this past Sunday’s Hola Chola Pop Up Shop that took place at the National Museum of Mexican Art. The event was created to celebrate the designs of Susanna Gonzalez Torres of Hola Chola. Susanna is currently on tour throughout different cities selling her designs and making exclusive pieces for each city. If you made it out, you were able to get your nails done with a flare inspired by the Mexican culture from the good people at Hush Salon. As you walked into the function, you were able to see some old school lowriders provided by Neighborhood Legends and Streetwise Car Club. It was the perfect spot to get your Instagram stunting on. Throughout the night, Latnix and old school tunes were provided by our own homie, Freddy Phatz who kept the dance floor busy throughout the event. Drinks were inspired by your local Southside Mexican paleteria, La Michoacana who provided the mixers for the Hennessy X Agua Fresca de Pina, Hennessy X Agua Fresca de Fresa and of course Hennessy X Horchata. The good people at Cold Chillen provided the awesome designs and graphics including the menus and invites. During the event, Susanna gave an inspirational speech on how the Mexican Culture influenced her designs and how her hardships and travels throughout Mexico have led her to her present situation. Check out the pictures of the event below!

posted by Oscar February 27, 2017

Today we got a glimpse at the dopeness that will surround the 2017 edition of the Pitchfork Music Festival with the announcement of the headliners: LCD Soundsystem will headline on Friday night, followed by A Tribe Called Quest on Saturday night, with Solange closing out the festival on Sunday.

I called it with both the Tribe and Solange heading for this fest, both coming off a 2016 that saw them realize truly amazing records. LCD Soundsystem for their part are headlining a summer festival in the Chi for a second year in a row, extending their comeback some and allowing plenty more to tell ’em to shut up and play the hits!

Along with this news, the festival organizers have announced they are partnering with Saint Heron for a series of events curated by this innovative label and arts platform founded by Solange Knowles. The Saint Heron-charged event series will feature an onsite art installation, film screening, artist talks, late night jazz jam sessions, and more. Event Recap: The Chicago Ball – Swopes x Trashhand Exhibit

posted by JuicyJackie June 29, 2015

From the moment I learned of the exhibit on Twitter, I was already super hyped. I’ve followed Swopes & Trashhand’s work for a while now, so I already knew I was in for something really cool. The event was on a Friday night, so what’s better than checking out some beautiful art & having fun?

I walked in and was instantly pleasantly surprised by the images hanging from the ceiling at the Lacuna Artist Loft. Too excited to even notice the Mountain Dew samples to the right by the entrance, I rushed past them, completely captivated by the amazing presentation at the front of the house (I definitely found them later, thank you Mountain Dew!). Every single image deserved multiple viewings to fully appreciate how well the brands were produced and just how much these were so masterfully taken. It was also extremely cool vibing with so many people, some that I knew from the scene and others that this event gave me the opportunity to meet and talk about the pieces and how awesome the show looked.
