The countdown to the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be held in Russia is about to reach just 6 months more to go, so adidas Soccer has given us a glimpse at what some of the teams competing in that spectacle will be sporting next summer. The Home kits of Germany, Spain, Russia, Japan, Colombia, Argentina and Mexico all revealed, and each one has taken inspiration from iconic shirts from their respective pasts.
The new jersey for FIFA World Cup defending champions Germany is a take on the team’s iconic 1990 shirt. Hosts Russia will be playing in an updated version of their 1988 Olympic Games kit, where the team won Gold. Messi and the rest of Argentina will be competing in an albiceleste shirt that celebrates the federation’s 125-year anniversary, which features an embossed sign-off combined of laurels (incorporated into the stripes) and the number 125.
2010 winners Spain pay homage to their 1994 shirt with a line graphic design consisting of diamonds in red, yellow and blue. Perhaps the best of the bunch, Colombia reminds us of their standout jersey for 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy that boasts a blue and red graphic design on the side of the kit highlighting the Colombian flag colors. Also worth noting is that GK jersey was inspired by René Higuita’s shirt from that ’90 tournament.
Japan incorporates traditional craftsmanship of Sashiko stitching technique for their classic blue shirt that also features hues of red and white as a nod to the national flag. Mexico’s (¡viva!) la verde has a gradient graphic running from the hem towards the chest. Belgium refreshed its 1984 kit with argyle in black yellow and red (the colors of the Belgian flag) with the federation badge in the center.
