Recap: Our Favorite Moments From Soundset 2017

The POD team is back in Chicago after some very good times in the Twin Cities. Soundset is something we look forward to every and this year once again didn’t disappoint. Despite lineup changes before and during Sunday’s festivities, the show went on without any major setbacks. Below you can find POD’s favorite moments written by Alex and I.

Travis Scott Delivers Amazing Set In A Storm

Travis Scott and his pet animatronic bird, Jack, made their trip to Minnesota for Soundset and they definitely put on a hell of a show. The crowd got an early glimpse of Travis during Gucci Mane’s set but his entire solo set a few hours later was something to behold. Despite a storm coming down hard a few songs into his set, Travis did not miss a step with his performance. He actually stepped up his energy and welcomed the pouring rain. The GOOD Music emcee ran through fan favorites off of his albums and and even included some new material in his set. The only downside was we only got to see him perform “Goosebumps” about 4 times. Maybe we’ll catch him break his record some other time.

070 Shake Performs at Fifth Element Stage

After following 070 Shake’s movement as of late, it was evident that I had to check out her set at the Fifth Element Stage. She had been opening up for The 1975 while they were on tour in North America, so I’m sure she was able to pick up a few things from the band when it comes to stage presence. From the beginning, 070 Shake performed my personal favorite, “Connect” which pretty much set the table for the rest of her performance. As I looked back at the crowd that was present for her performance so early in the day, I couldn’t help but notice that this young lady will be taking over the game sooner rather than later. Let’s hope we can get her back in Chicago soon!

Peanut Butter Wolf & Pete Rock DJ Sets at Essential Elements Stage

I’m always up for some good DJ sets from a pair of legends! If you add some B-Boys into the mix, you know it’ll be a good time. When I arrived to the Essential Elements Stage, Peanut Butter Wolf was into his set and the B-Boys were already doing their thing. The breakbeats were definitely rocking and we were able to catch some footage of the B-Boys in action while Peanut Butter Wolf took care of the soundtrack.

After Peanut Butter Wolf finished his set, the Chocolate Boy Wonder came up to bring a different taste of breakbeats for the B-Boys this time around. There’s never a dull moment when it comes to any Pete Rock set, as he always bring something new for everyone listening.

T.I. Runs Through Hits To Start Off Set

One of the main acts I wanted to see at Soundset this year was T.I. because he’s one of my favorites growing up and I had yet to see him live in person. There was a bit of a hold up before Tip’s set as his band got everything set up and schedules were still being worked out, but when he hit the stage, all delays were forgotten. Tip didn’t waste anytime and gave the crowd what they wanted. I was pleasantly surprised to hear “Rubberband Man,” “Top Back” and “24’s” in the first 15 minutes. I had to leave his set to catch Playboi Carti but I got to see clips of him bringing out Young Dro and performing more classics to close out his set. I need to experience a full T.I. set soon after seeing his performance at Soundset.

Playboi Carti Steals The Show at Fifth Element Stage

Playboi Carti is one of the most buzzing new artists in 2017 with hits like “Magnolia” off of his very popular self titled project that dropped a little over a month ago. Soundset fans were blessed with the news that Carti was in fact replacing Mac Miller on the lineup and from the clip above, you can see it was a very good decision. Young Carti kicked off his set with “Magnolia” and the crowd rapped his lyrics back to him from then on for the entire set. Let’s hope festival organizers take notice and add Carti to their lineups so he can continue tearing up festival stages across the country this summer.

You can always count on Soundset to be ahead of the game with the acts they select to perform at their fest. See y’all in Minnesota on Memorial Day weekend next year!
