Review: Our 5 Favorite Songs on Cage The Elephant’s ‘Tell Me I’m Pretty’

Cage The Elephant - Tell Me Im Pretty

Cage The Elephant have released their new album Tell Me I’m Pretty, a project that created a lot of buzz around itself after news broke out that the Kentucky rockers had enlisted The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach to produce it. The album looked very promising with that alone, but the band let the music do the real talking and boy they did talk a good game through album cuts like lead single “Mess Around,” “Trouble,” and “Too Late To Say Goodbye.”

Lead singer Matt Shultz said with the album’s announcement on Facebook:

With this record, we wanted to be more transparent. We wanted to capture the sentiment of each song, and whatever emotional response it provoked, to be really honest to that.

Verdict? They nailed it! The album has a fine mix of sounds, each conveying a different emotion that will take you on a journey of Rock & Roll bliss. So hit the jump to see which songs we picked as the 5 best tracks off the album. Let us know if yours made the cut!

“Cry Baby”

The first song on our list also happens to be the album opener. This song is a bustling one with this cool, jangly guitar and sparkly chorus that beckons T. Rex. Nothing better than an album hitting the ground running.

“Mess Around”

Song number two on the list? Why it’s track no. 2! “Mess Around” is feisty, with an incredibly catchy and simple chorus that we come to expect from these guys. This one sounds like it was plucked from the swinging 60s, straight outta London Town, but it’s really the product of some really groovy American southerners.

“Too Late To Say Goodbye”

On “Too Late” we hear the band slow things down, with a killer eerie riff that’ll raise your hairs. I can already picture one big sing-along when they play this one live.

“That’s Right”

This is absolutely my favorite song on the entire album. The tempo on this one is nice and chill, with this bass line that rides the whole way through and a guitar part that’s just so damn nice and wavy! It’s like a cheerier take on the southwestern songs this album’s Producer crafted with new band The Arcs.

“Portuguese Knife Fight”

The last song on this albums lands on our Top 5 thanks to its churning guitar and great beat. There’s something so sexy about singing someone the line from this song “I want to waste my life with you” and following that line by saying “Well the look in your eyes says you’re feeling the same way too.” The fuzzed out guitar makes it feel very Punk-y too, so I love this song for that too.
