Recap of the Beautiful Performance Kehlani Gave us in CHICAGO

Kehlani is one of my favorite artists so… of course I copped tickets for her Chicago show! This was my third time seeing her live & this time it was her first HEADLINING show in CHICAGO! It was also her first You Should Be Here Tour stop. Not only was I going to see Lani perform, I got “meet & greet” passes to meet her. I got a flat tire on my way to the concert but I didn’t let that stop me, I put on a spare and made my way (yeah I changed that tire myself). Meet and greets started at 6 and ended at 7:30. I arrived at the venue around 7 to see a NEVER-ENDING line! I instantly got sad… “Great, looks like I’m not meeting her this time.”

I started standing in the very long line and was very upset. I looked at the girls in front of me and said “Is this really the line for meet & greet?” They looked at my & quickly said no.. I quickly ran to the entrance to Lincoln Hall to a much shorter line for the meet and greet. This made me really happy. They handed me my VIP badge and I entered ready to meet my favorite vocalist. I walked in and right away saw her hugging fans and smiling.. (of course) I stood in the meet in greet line dancing while Chicago’s own DJ OREO spun some tracks. I’ve exchanged multiple words with Lani on twitter but would never expect her to remember me since I’m one follower out of… *checks twitter* 174K. I walked up to her & hugged her asking how she was & she said “Omg it’s you in real life, I’m good.. Thank you so much for your love & support I’ve seen it all on twitter.” We took some photos together & I let her know how much I loved her music, afterwards I got a signed poster & YSBH CD from her.

I got a good spot in the crowd to watch the show. Lani’s opener was Pell, who had some pretty good songs. I’ve honestly never heard of him or his music before but found myself bobbing my head & screaming Pell Yeah when he asked the crowd to. Why not support a new up & coming artist who had some pretty decent tracks?! A song that I can remember I really liked that he performed was “Got it Like That” that song made the crowd go nuts! You can find Pell on SoundCloud if you would like to check him out. Everyone was anxious for Kehlani, we knew it was almost time for her to come out. I was really close to the stage right in the middle. DJ OREO & Kehlani’s DJ Noodles came out & hyped up the crowd. When Kehlani came out the intro monologue started playing, she came out with her You Should Be Here Leather jacket & started the show with the song, You Should be Here. It was the first song & I already thought to myself… “Perfect.” She played songs off “Cloud 19” as well & even “Raw & True.” It was a mostly female crowd but there was some males there as well. After Kehlani hyped us up with “Niggas” she took a break & some SaveMoney members hit the stage. Chance & Towkio performed a bit of “Heaven Only Knows.”

Lani got back on stage & slowed things down for us a bit playing her softer tunes. The whole hall got quiet & the spotlight shined on Kehlani as the melody for “The Letter” started to play. This song is super emotional & put tears in my eyes because of how beautiful her voice sounded, how you can relate, how much emotion is there & the lyrics. Jahaan Sweet , Lani’s partner in crime in this music ish- who just graduated from Juilliard- was playing the piano as Lani sang. She really memorized the crowd with her voice. I haven’t even talked about the dancing yet, but you can tell these girls worked their asses off. She’s the complete package- beautiful, smart, confident, killer dance moves & and the voice of an angel. If you haven’t checked out the video’s going around online Chance The Rapper joined Lani onstage for their song “The Way” (video coming soon???) Chance and Lani’s performance wowed us- Chance looked impressed by Lani & her dancers & was checking them all out. The girls did some booty bumpin, twerkin & a little bit of grinding was involved. Lani even confirmed her & Chance were only friends after the performance. The show ended with Lani belting out “DAMN I FEEL ALIVEE.” The crowd sang along to every word, every song, loudly and proudly. All of us left with smiles, appreciating the performance we just saw.

Kehlani is beyond a performer, not only did the performance have soul, it had confidence and love. You felt like you were part of the tsunami family. You felt her pain, you felt her happiness, you knew she truly meant her words. Kehlani and team sold out the Chicago show along with every other show on the You Should Be Here tour. In her song “Yet” she says “they talking bout I’m next to blow,” yes they are, and we can see why. If you haven’t listened yet, hop on the wave, it’s causing tsunamis.
