Last night, September 27, was the first of a two-night stint in Chicago for Blues revivalists, The Black Keys. The band was touring in support of their latest album, Turn Blue.
“The Keys” saved little room in their set for banter with lead singer Dan Auerbach typically using the time between songs to say “alright, Chicago let’s keep it moving!” No filler necessary…
While this was the Turn Blue Tour, the setlist had a good mix of previous hits and live standards from their 10+ years-spanning discography with tracks off the new release. From Turn Blue we saw “It’s Up To You Now” as the set opener and “Fever” (above); not hearing any others until the encore, which started with “Weight Of Love” and then the song giving the tour’s namesake. The rest of the night was an onslaught of some of the best songs this band has ever produced, like El Camino standouts “Gold On The Ceiling” (below) and set closer “Little Black Submarines,” plus “Howlin’ For You” and the ever-awesome “Tighten Up” off Brothers. The band also played live covers of Edwyn Collins’ “A Girl Like You” and “Leavin’ Trunk” (below) from Taj Mahal.
The Black Keys gave us hit after hit at this show and they delivered each performance with such power and conviction that it took you away for a sec and let you to wallow from the moment the first riff was churned off Dan Auerbach’s guitar. Patrick Carney let his thunderous drumming do the talking for him, and if you stared at him doing his thing for too long you would almost drown out the rest of the music and solely focus on him. The Keys seemed like they were out to further prove that they are worthy of their reputation as one of just a few bands who sit at the top of the world as the best acts around (up there with Jack White, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes). This first night at the UC delivered plenty of head-banging moments while showing us that the world needs more guitar gods and heavy riffs. See more footage below.
