Recap: ‘@DadBoner and Friends, You Guys’ (Just For Laughs Chicago)

20130613-134404.jpgLast night, June 12, we caught the @DadBoner and Friends, You Guys show at Stage 773 as part of the Just For Laughs Festival. While we weren’t entirely familiar with the @DadBoner character, we knew about its cult following and felt compelled enough to want to check out what Mike Burns, creator of the character, had in store for this. In hindsight, the turnout for the show did not do it justice but Burns pointed out correctly that once again, as a Michigan man, he’s been “f*cked” by the Blackhawks, this time thanks to yet another nail-biting OT game that kept fans in front of TV screens over being out for a night of comedy.

For those of you that may not know the character of @DadBoner/Karl Welzein check out this video from Vice in which they go into the story behind the conception of the ultimate badass to ever hit Twitter.

The @DadBoner and Friends, You Guys started with Burns’ intro to @DadBoner and how their latest project is a series of screenplays written in the voice of Karl Welzein actually got a book deal! Burns reads the actual pitch that lead to the deal, filled with references to heavy drinking, b.m.’s and badass behavior, which helps you understand exactly why “he” needs to be a published author. Pick up “Power Moves: Livin’ the American Dream, USA Style,” starting July 9.

The rest of the show involved the help of guests like wrestler Colt Cabana (@ColtCabana), and comedians Brendon Walsh (@brendonwalsh) and Sean Patton (@mrseanpatton); each guest telling a funny story. Cabana talked about how working with Jasmine St. Claire (look her up [NSFW]) lead to a real highlight in his career, Walsh gave a hilarious recount of the night in which he almost got 2 DUI’s in one night, and Patton brought up the idea that if the whole world turned gay overnight, we would all be in a better place in a 20 years (gay racists? Don’t think so!).

For the final, and arguably the funniest act of the show, all of the performers came out for a live reading of a Karl Welzein screenplay. Welzein’s screenplay was awesome from start to finish. The actors he would commission would include Guy Fieri and Martin Lawrence, killer fight scenes would include a Rambo knife and “the hardest Stone Cold Stunner anyone’s ever seen!” and manly food close-up shots plus plenty of beer all made for a real kick-ass film we would all be lucky to see.

I made an attempt to avoid going too into the details of the show because it is worth a watch. There’s another showing tonight, more details below.
