Review: MiC Kurb-Broken Home

MiC Kurb, a 16-year old emcee from Hartford, Connecticut, has given us the opportunity to listen to his new project before its release date this Monday, November 12th. I was first introduced to MiC through an email submission back in August for his song “Grindin.” It was a very good first impression of the young artist and I was definitely looking forward to hearing new material from him.

The ASF (Alive Since Forever) representative came through with another new track in early October. The song, “Heart Cry,” is featured on the new mixtape, but with a slightly different form; the version on the mixtape is an extended version and also features an intro track produced by MiC himself that really adds to the song. With those two releases it was very evident that MiC was a true lyricist, but it is more evident when you listen to Broken Home from start to finish. MiC’s flow and lyrics are very strong throughout the entire tape. A perfect example of that is how MiC kicks the project off with a solid intro in “The Possesion.” J Staffz provides a great backdrop for MiC as he spits about people confusing his confidence for cockiness and how he feels he is the best in his city and state. The track that immediately follows the intro is “November,” which was the last leak off of the project; MiC once again is on a mission to prove he is the best around and dares anyone to try to test him.

MiC raps about wanting to be elite in hip hop and provides a pretty good hook over a dope J Staffz production on the track “Elite” midway through the project. The production throughout the entire project is very solid with J Staffz, Dom McLennon, Amuro, Kiko Merley, The Creatives and others providing MiC with some solid instrumentals. Kiko Merley only produced two tracks on this project, but his tracks “Occupation” and “Wake Up” are two of my favorite instrumentals on the project. There is also sampling throughout the entire project, but my favorite is on the Illa-produced “Jet Plane,” where he samples Angus and Julia Stone’s “Big Jet Plane.” MiC’s fast-paced flow goes along well with the instrumental. MiC keeps features to a minimum on the new project, but those are featured definitely deliver. The two standout tracks with features are “Mischief Thoughts” featuring Kevin Abstract and the bonus track “Down” featuring Sage and Kevin as well.

Make sure to pick up Broken Home hosted by DJ DopeVibes on Monday November 12th here. It is one of the best projects I’ve heard this year so far and definitely worth the listen. MiC’s flow, lyrics and beat selection do not disappoint. He is well on his way to putting Connecticut on the map.
