Review: Caleb James-Ground Up

Caleb James, a member Chicago’s SaveMoney, released his debut project just a few days ago in the form of a mixtape, Ground Up. To say that this is a dope mixtape is an understatement.

Caleb James and ThemPeople handle all of the production on the 12 track project except for 1 track (DJ Spinz produced “Grind Like Me”). Caleb starts off with a very solid intro shouting out his fellow SaveMoney members who appear throughout the entire mixtape and lets everyone know that he was responsible for Chance’s very popular “Juke” off of 10Day. Caleb goes on to use a sample of Dave Hollister’s “One Woman Man” on WildNout,” my favorite track on the entire tape.

Caleb James goes on to work with Kids These Days and SaveMoney members Vic Mensa and Nico Segal on back to back tracks “Payback Is A Dog” and “Freddie.” Joey Purp provides Caleb with a verse on the reggae-sampling smokers track “Greenthumbs.” With a smokers track already checked off the list, Caleb doesn’t forget about making a song for the ladies on the project and provides them with “Like That” featuring Brill on the hook. Chance The Rapper makes his first appearance on this project while Vic Mensa makes his second appearance on the “SaveMoney Cypher” where all three artists exchange bars along with Malcom London. Chance provides a catchy hook alongside Caleb on the following track “Grind Like Me” featuring Tris J and Brian Fresco. Caleb finishes off the solid project by dropping a verse on the David Banner hit “Like a Pimp.”
