Concert Recap: Young The Giant

The Pursuit of Dopeness knows no bounds, is not confined to a single particular genre, and is always searching for new, dope events to be a part of. This past Thursday, our team headed to The Riviera Theatre in the North Side of Chicago to catch Young The Giant in concert.

The alternative rockers’ popularity was evident from the moment tickets to this show went on sale. Originally slated to take place at the Metro, an overwhelming popular demand lead to the show changing venues to “The Riv” to accommodate for more fans. Wise move from the concert organizers! The show was put together by MTVU for their Woody Awards Tour presented by Miller Lite.

Opening band, Walk The Moon, set up the tempo with a set that was full of fun energy. Their brand of “rock” music quickly filled the Riv, causing many fans to bob their heads to the rhythm of the slick bass grooves, jump around when the band sang at the top of their lungs and sang along when the chorus to their favorite songs came up. All in all, the few of us from Pursuit of Dopeness that were able to witness this up and coming band perform have agreed that we can definitely see this band headlining their own tour in no time.

Now, let’s talk about the main attraction… Young The Giant. The second these guys took the stage you felt the energy that the fans in attendance gave out, and the band fed off that to start their show with a bang.

The band’s set included many songs from their hit debut album like “Cough Syrup,” and “Apartment” while they also performed new songs that they were debuting on this tour. Young The Giant had us fans in the palm of their hands, making us sway with their infectious energy and we were enjoying every bit of it.

The true highlights came after the band returned for an encore. The band came out sporting fur coats (sorry PETA!) to pay tribute to the music of the city of Chicago by playing an even smoother version of R. Kelly’s “Ignition.” Surprisingly, the crowd knew every word and sang along to the very! Young The Giant chose their big hit “My Body,” to close out the show and the wait for that song was well worth it. The Riv started booming, shaking, and rocking like it had not been prior to that song.

To quickly summarize, this concert was dope and we highly recommend you catch them while they’re in a town near you.

Below you can see the videos to 1.) Ignition and 2.) My Body. Enjoy!
